Some fans have been unimpressed with the show since its first season back in 2006, but Panettiere - Claire Bennet on the NBC drama - has claimed that the show is still fresh.

“It’s been very new and different,” she said. “On the show you never know what to expect, but this season has been this trip with new people. It’s very much about people with abilities hiding and them coming out.

She added that the current season has seen her character head in a new direction which has not been seen before.

“Claire’s been chasing this normal life, but maybe that’s not what she wanted. She always find a reason to jump back into it - to save people and fix things.”

The 20-year-old actress, who is best known for playing cheerleader Claire Bennett in the TV series, released her first single, Wake Up Cll, in 2008 and her vocals have also been featured on several Disney albums.

She said to UK magazine Now: ‘I’d like to focus on music. I’ve been singing for almost as long as I’ve been acting and I love it. It’s just a different way of expressing myself and getting to be me, not having to play anyone else.’

And the 20-year-old actress admitted she loved shooting the scenes.

Her character, cheerleader Claire Bennett, goes to college and meets new room-mate Gretchen - Madeline Zima of Californication fame - who swiftly develops a major crush on the cute blonde.

Hayden said: “Claire has a room-mate who is the biggest relationship in this season because she has finally got what she had with Zach, her friend in the first season, which was a confidante and somebody who she can tell her secrets to.

“She hasn’t had anyone like that since then.

“Then this new character Gretchen comes along, and she becomes that person for me.

“It’s a very interesting relationship because there’s a little bit of a flirting with, ‘Are we friends? Are we more? Do I have feelings for you in that way?’ “That’s the relationship so far and where exactly it’s going, I have no idea.

“I absolutely enjoyed playing that kind of complicated relationship. Oh, yeah.

“I kissed a girl and I liked it.’”

Hayden admits the new element in Claire’s story has made the series more exciting for her - in fact she can’t wait to get her script each week to find out what she’ll be up to next in the superheroes drama.

Her character’s special power is the ability to recover from any injury. So far, viewers have seen her survive fires and falls. At times, the special ability can be more of a hindrance than a help for Claire.

A further complication comes in the form of her adoptive father, who was once in charge of all the Heroes and has a sidekick who can wipe memories.

Hayden said: “Gretchen’s really the first person that Claire’s been able to let in on her secret and somebody that’s really a confidante. But that’s a very delicate balance that can easily fall apart.

“One little mis-step and her dad will bring Rene, the Haitian, in to wipe their memories and that will be that.

“Claire’s happy that she’s semi caught-up to that normal life that she’s been chasing. But where exactly we’re going to go, I think there’s going to be some manipulation and just some fun stuff.

“We really don’t know. That’s why we get so excited to read the scripts every week.”

Hayden has been on the show for four years and she enjoys a close relationship with many of her co-stars.

In the early days, she dated Milo Ventimiglia, who plays Peter Petrelli, but they split last year.

Recently, she has been spotted enjoying the New Year sunshine in Miami with the boxing champ Wladimir Klitschko.

And in the summer of 2009 she was the rumoured squeeze of legendary womaniser Steve Jones.

With the relentless Heroes filming schedule and big-screen roles in films like I Love You Beth Cooper and upcoming animated flick Alpha And Omega, it’s surprising Hayden finds time for romance.

She has grown up on screen and recently celebrated turning 20 with the Heroes cast.

“I think our closeness during seasons depends on whom we’re working with the most,” said Hayden.

“Some seasons, we haven’t seen me with a lot of people. Masi Oka, the lucky duck, got to work with a lot of the cast. But some of us just don’t cross paths all the time, not frequently.

“It’s exciting when we get that chance, that one scene or that one episode where we get to do that.

“But I just celebrated my fourth birthday on the set. I grew up with these guys. They are my family. I was 16 and now I’m 20 and we’re still loving what we do and enjoying each other.”

While many actors become protective and possessive over their characters after such a long stint on a TV show, Claire admits the nature of Heroes, with numerous writers and wild plot swings, means she has to go with whatever is thrown at her.

She laughed: “Looking at the changes we’ve had and the different places that they’ve taken our characters, it would be a little difficult if we were territorial. I’m not saying that there aren’t story lines that you go, ‘Wait, hold on, she really wouldn’t do that.’

“Or, on rare occasions, there’s little lines here and there that they put in and you go, ‘I just can’t figure out how to say that the way Claire would say it. I don’t feel like that’s something maybe that she would say.’ “But we’ve gone to the future and back again. We’ve gone to the past. We’ve gone all over the world.

“We’ve become good and bad and I just think there’s nothing but excitement that we all get from that.

“You want nothing but spontaneity and change. You’re like, ‘Yeah, let’s make her this.’ You get excited from that kind of stuff.”

The big news this season is the arrival of new cast members, Scot Ray Park - alias Darth Maul in Star Wars - who plays a mysterious carnival leader, and Prison Break star Robert Knepper, who will have the power to move earth and water.

Without giving too much away, Hayden works with both actors - and found the experience thrilling.

She said: “Ray is usually at conventions so I’ve known him for a while. I met him at Comic-Con. He’s generally doing some sort of lesson or Jedi fight with light sabres somewhere.

“So I think for him to be up on a big panel like ours was cool, seeing all the people that he’s generally just screwing around with and fighting with.”

Hayden added: “Robert is one of a kind. He has the same car as me but he has a taxidermy mouse with wings dangling from his mirror.

“It is really uncomfortable. I sat there for 10 minutes, staring at it, going, ‘I hope nobody thinks this is my car because mine’s the exact same car. Just one small, minor difference.’”

Unlike Claire, Hayden has missed out on college because of her work on Heroes.

But she insists she is learning the craft of acting and, therefore, is not missing out on an education.

She said: “I’ve had the privilege of having long and very intellectual conversations with people and sometimes I just sit there and listen. It’s like a better version of a class.

“So, even though I’m not sitting at a desk and in school, I’m still learning.”

And will this learning take her further away from Heroes and see her spending more time on the big screen? It seems the answer is yes and no. For while she enjoys movies, she loves coming her day job.

She said: “It does make me excited to go back to Heroes when I do movies. I love to do movies. I find so much joy in being able to travel around and play new characters.

“But there is also something settling about coming back to a place where you know where you’re going to go every morning, you know who’s waiting for you. It’s like going home.”
